Peter and Paul Fortress

Russia, St. Petersburg

Peter and Paul fortress is a historic center of the city from which it started. It takes a central place in its architectural look as well, with Peter and Paul Cathedral being one of the city's symbols. The fortress was constructed according to a plan worked out by Peter the Great. Slightly extended from east to west, it is shaped an irregular hexagon with fortification bastions standing forward. Originally the fortress was built in wood, but in 1706 the rebuilding in stone began according to the project proposed by Domenico Trezini. The main entrance gate was first wooden, and then the stone gate representing a triumphal arch was constructed.
