Korela Fortress

Korela Fortress was founded by the Karelians. It was first mentioned in a Novgorodian chronicle of 1143. Swedish chronicles have reported of the settlement of Korela in 1295. Korela Fortress is known as monument of Novgorodian architecture of the 14th century. The fortress has gone through several modifications resulting from invasions and fires. The present building has kept defense banks of the 16-17th centuries earthworks. The preserved Round tower, which played an important defensive role, is a Swedish late 16th century construction. It has also been used as prison from the 13th up to the 19th century. Neighboring Old arsenal house, which is also a Swedish late 16th century building, was used for weapon storage. In the mid-18th century, the fortress was turned into a political prison of the Imperial Russia. Some participants of the Decembrist Revolt (1825) were confined there.
