Troitse-Sergieva Lavra

Russia, Sergiev Posad, Moscow Oblast

Troitse-Sergieva Lavra is located northeast from Moscow in the center of Sergiev Posad, which was known as Zagorsk before 1991. Irregular polygon occupied by Lavra is bounded with brick walls of 1.5 km long, 14 m high and 6 m wide. The Lavra is being kept in its present state since mid-17th century, when its stonewalls have been modernized. The fortress has 4 octahedral towers in corners and 7 tetrahedral towers in spans. Towers are put in the forefront of walls to facilitate its defense. However, the main treasure of Troitse-Sergieva Lavra is Trinity Cathedral constructed in 1422 and decorated with icons by Andrei Rublev, the greatest Russian icon painter who probably lived in the Lavra.
