Cathedral of St. Sophia

Russia, Novgorod

Cathedral of St. Sophia in Novgorod is an outstanding monument of ancient Russian architecture. It is only several years younger than St. Sophia cathedral in Kiev, but a hundred years older than Notre-Dame in Paris. The cathedral was constructed between 1045 and 1050 by the son of Yaroslav the Wise, Novgorod Prince Vladimir. The cathedral is topped with six domes; the middle helmet-shaped dome was guilt in the 15th century, and there's a pigeon sitting on top of its cross.
