Spaso-Preobrazhenskiy monastery

Russia, Staraya Russa, Novgorod Oblast

Spaso-Preobrazhenskiy monastery was established in 1192 on Polisty River. First wooden monastery edifice dates the same year. Destroyed by fire in 1198, it was replaced by the stone Spasskiy cathedral having been constructed for 70 days. The cathedral has gone through several modifications in 15th and 17th centuries: in 1630, its northern side was completed with a bell tower and a small church of Birth of Christ.   By now, all monastery buildings have been restored, and an exposition of the 15-17th century frescos and ancient Russian culture museum are held in it.
