Oreshek (Nutlet) fortress

Russia, Leningrad Oblast

Oreshek fortress was first mentioned in a Novgorodian chronicle as follows: "In 6831 (which is 1323, New Style) Yury Danilovich, Prince of Novgorod, grandson of Alexander Nevsky, built a wooden fortress named Oreshek". Original stonewalls remains of 1352 have been revealed during archeological excavations in 1968-1969. A fragment of northern wall with the Gate tower has thus become a valuable display of museum's exposition. Fortress walls and towers dating late 15th and early 16th centuries have been modified during the following centuries.
