Bell Tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral

Russia, Kaliazin, Tver Oblast

Before the 12th century, there appeared a monastery of St. Nicholas in the land of Kaliazin. In the 15th century, the Trinity monastery was founded, and it is by its walls that the associate troops of Minin and Pozharskiy have defeated Polish invaders. In 1939 during the Soviet rule, the edifice was detonated and flooded together with the old city. The bell tower has survived by a miracle — the early spring tide saved it from being demolished. A part of the ground floor, which is under water, has been heavily destroyed for several years. To prevent future destruction a tiny artificial island was raised around it. Nowadays, the bell tower stands half flooded alone in the middle of the Volga River.
