Tobolsk Kremlin

Russia, Tobolsk, Tyumen Oblast

Tobolsk is the only town in Siberia which has a standing stone kremlin, an elaborate city-fortress. Its construction was provoked by two major reasons: the necessity to resist frequent fires as well as the growth of Tobolsk and its becoming the administrative and religious center of Siberia. In May 1700, the first Kremlin building, the Order Hall was laid. Later, the Gostiny Dvor (bazaar) was constructed. In 1714, according to Peter I order prohibiting stone buildings in all Russian cities except Saint Petersburg, constructing of the Tobolsk Kremlin stopped and restarted only in 1740s. One of the most significant constructions of that period is the Cathedral bell tower, which dominates the Kremlin ensemble.
