Ferapontov monastery

Russia, Ferapontovo, Vologda Oblast

Ferapontov monastery is an orthodox cloister famous for its frescos performed by Dionisiy. The monastery is located in Vologda region, not far from Kirillov-Belozerskiy monastery, on a hill between lakes Borodavskoe and Passkoe. Founded in 1398 by Reverend Ferapont of Belozersk who came there together with Kirill of Belozersk from Siminov monastery in Moscow, the cloister prospered in 15-16th centuries. However, in the so-called "Time of Troubles" the monastery was on the decline and closed in 1798. In 1903, according to the Holy Synod's decree, it was reopened this time as a convent.
