St. Peters Basilica, St. Peters Square

Italy, Vatican City

St. Peters Square and St. Peters Basilica legally belong to the Vatican City. The place is one of the biggest squares in Europe; however, the Red Square in Moscow, the Palace Square in Saint Petersburg and the Senate Square in Paris leave it behind. A line of columns encircles the square, which is a Berninis project. St. Peters Basilica, also known as the Vatican Cathedral, was built by several architects, including Michelangelo who designed the dome. In the Square there is an Egyptian obelisk in the center and two fountains on each side the right one designed by Maderno in 1613, and the left one designed by Bernini in 1675.
