Tower Bridge

England, London

The best project for the Tower Bridge was proposed in 1884 by the London architect Horas Johnson. Constructing took eight years and required five general contractors and 432 workers. A massive pier was put into the river-bed to support the foundation of the bridge which is 11 thousand tones. The bridge itself was built of granite and Portland stone. By the time the construction was finished (1894), the Tower Bridge appeared to be the biggest and the most complicated drawbridge that ever existed. This is a hydraulic bridge that was put into action by powerful steam pump engines.
