The Little Mermaid

Denmark, Copenhagen

Every city has its own symbol and Copenhagen does not make an exception. By the seaboard on a granite rock there sit a Little Mermaid looking thoughtfully to the sea. This delicate statue was commissioned to the Danish sculptor Edward Eriksen by Carl Jacobsen, a local brewer and a patron of art. It was the sculptors wife Eline Price, ballerina of the Royal Opera and ballet theatre, who acted as model for the sculpture. In 1913 Carl Jacobsen presented the Little Mermaid to the city, and since then it has become a true symbol of the capital.
