The Sinai Peninsula has always been a transitory territory of several empires, being captured by Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, Arabs and Turks. However, it is widely known as a biblically significant site where the Jews have been wandered for 40 years upon leaving Egypt, and it is allegedly the site where Moses received the Ten Commandments. In the south of the peninsula there raises the Mount Sinai, which is 2285 meters high. In the middle of the 6th century Emperor Justinian decided to build a monastery there. The burning bush chapel and the monastery with its fine Transfiguration basilica are encircled with a massive wall to protect them from nomad tribes forays.
