The Rialto Bridge

Italy, Venice

It is the oldest bridge across the Grand Canal and probably the most famous in the city. Originally it was made of wood, and after it had collapsed in 1444 under the weight of a crowd watching a boat parade, it was rebuilt in wood again. However, the new bridge was not stable enough, so it was decided to replace it. The authorities requested proposals for the renewal of the Rialto Bridge, and several projects were considered. The present stone bridge, a singe span designed by Antonio de Ponte was finally completed in 1591. It is remarkably similar to the wooden bridge it succeeded. The arch is 28 m long (which corresponds to the narrowest place of the Canal); its maximum height in the center is 7.5 m. The bridge stands on 12 thousands piles driven into the canal bottom. There are 24 painters studios inside the bridge, and it brings both a charming atmosphere of the city and a spectacular view on the Canal and its palaces.
