Leaning tower of Pisa

Italy, Pisa

The Leaning tower was designed as a campanile of Pisas cathedral. It is sometimes said that the leaning was deliberately done by the constructors to demonstrate their architectural skills; however, it does not seem to be true. More realistic is the following: the tower was intended to stand vertically, but due to its unstable foundation began leaning soon after construction, which became a part of the design. The towers architectural style is described as roman with elements of local Pisa style. However, light influence of Islamic style can se observed in its black and white exterior decor. The height of the tower is 55 meters from the ground. Its weight is estimated at 14500 tones. The current inclination is about 5.5 degrees. The tower has 296 steps.
