Giralda Tower

Spain, Seville

Nobody knows exactly when a minaret of major mosque of Seville, known as Guiralda, was laid. The tower got its name in 16th century when a turning figure of an angel was fixed on its top. The Spanish word girar (which means turn) was at the origin of the towers name. The tower is said to be an observatory, that is why after Sevilla had been conquered by King Fernando III the Saint, Prince Alfonso X of Castile, a passionate astronomer, decided to keep the tower. The Giralda is designed in Arabic style and constructed of brick. It stands on a foundation built from remains of ruined Visigoth temples and ancient Roman constructions.
