Wawel Castle

Poland, Krakow

A lime hillock situated on the left bank of the Vistula is a historic center of city of Krakow. The Royal Caste situated on the hill is a place of great significance for the Polish people. Inside the castle walls there are a pre-roman Rotunda of the Virgin Mary, and the Royal Palace originally built in gothic style in the 11th century, and later rebuilt in renaissance style. The history of the medieval Wawel is deeply intertwined with the history of the Polish lands. The Wawel hill reached its golden age in 14th century under King Casimir the Great. In 18-19th centuries it was conquered by the Austrians, then bared the French rule, and later passed to the Austrians again. When Poland lost its political independence, the Wawel became a symbol of the nations liberty. Since 1930, the Castle is an official residence of the president, although some buildings remain working museums.
