Big Wild Goose Pagoda

China, Xian

In 647, by order of Gaozong, the third emperor of Tan dynasty, a pagoda modeled from an Indian temple was built. Originally, it consisted of five floors, but during multiple reconstructions more stories have been added. The pagoda was built to store sutras and figurines of Buddha that were brought to China by Buddhist translator and traveler Xuanzang. He translated and worked up 1335 volumes in Chinese. The present pagoda is 64 meters tall and resembles a fortress.
