Foundation in detail

Chartres Cathedral

France, Chartres

The cathedral was laid in 11th century by the bishop Foulbert in the place of an ancient druid temple. After the fire of 1194, the cathedral was rebuilt, the ancient Foulbert crypt was built into the foundation, and the gothic facade of 1135-1180 integrated into the modern facade. The cathedral was consecrated in 1260. Nowadays, it is one of the most respected churches in the world. Despite of being unfinished (it was intended to raise six towers more) its silhouette is harmonious. The cathedral is 130 meters long, the vault of its nave is 36 meters high, and nave and aisles are 32 meters wide.
