Borobudur Temple

Indonesia, Java

Borobudur is located on the Indonesian island of Java. The name Borobudur is translated as monastery hill. Actually, the monument represents a hill covered with stone stupas from bottom to top, with all its eight levels opened to the Sun. Borobudur was built between 780 and 850 CE by the Javanese rulers of the Sailendra and Sanjaya dynasties. As time passed, Borobudur has been seriously affected and destroyed by natural forces, and heavily ransacked during the last centuries. It is in the 1970s that the monuments professional reconstruction started. The 800 thousand stupas were taken off from the hill and put back after drain ports, pipes, and filters had been repaired or changed, and ground and concrete had been laid.
