Smolny Cathedral

Russia, St. Petersburg

Smolny cathedral was built by the Italian architect Rastrelli who managed to combine both the elements of traditional Russian and European style. The Cathedral together with the Smolny Convent buildings represent one of the most spectacular city sights. However, Rastrelli has never seen his grandiose project finished - the works have been suspended for several decencies.   The Smolny Cathedral is thus the longest building that has ever been constructed in Saint Petersburg. The construction began in 1748, while the interior design was finished only in 1835. However, Rastrelli did not succeed in realizing the project completely as he planned a 140 m high bell tower, which would have been the tallest structure in the whole country.
