General Staff Headquarters Arch

Russia, St. Petersburg

The General Staff Headquarters were designed by Karl Rossi (an architect of Italian origin, although born in Saint Petersburg) and built between 1820-1830s. It is one of the most impressive buildings of its kind of Europe and is reported to have the longest facade in Europe. The General Staff Headquarters is continued with two buildings of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, all enclosed within the same facade. A triumphal arch links these two wings together. The arch is the most expressive element of the classic style building. Decorated with statues of warriors, arms and armor compositions, it is topped with a statue of Nike, Goddess of Victory riding the chariot of glory. The statue, which symbolizes the victory over Napoleon, was designed by the sculptors Pimenov and Demut-Malinovskiy.
