St. Isaac's Cathedral

Russia, St. Petersburg

St. Isaac's Cathedral is a remarkable monument of Russian late classicism. As well as Peter and Paul Cathedral and the Admiralty, its golden dome is seen everywhere in the city. The church was ordered by Tsar Alexander I. A specially appointed commission examined several designs, including that of the French-born architect Auguste de Monferrand. The cathedral took 40 years to construct. It is the forth largest cathedral in the world, left behind by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and St. Maria's Cathedral in Florence. It is 101.52 m high, on the area of 4 000 square meters, and it can house up to 12 000 people.
