Chesmenskaya Church

Russia, St. Petersburg

The site where the church is standing was occupied by marshes in early XVIII century. According to an old legend, it was the place where Catherine II learnt the news that the powerful Turk fleet had been defeated by the Russian squadron in the battle of Chesma on June 26, 1770. To celebrate the victory the Empress commanded to build a palace on the site where the envoy met her. The palace was projected as a place for rest on the road between Saint Petersburg and Tsarskoe Selo. The ensemble was designed and constructed by the French architect Felten, in 1774-1777. In 1780, the Chesma palace church, a rare example of the Gothic Revival in Russia, was consecrated.
