Marble Palace

The Marble Palace, which is a late XVIII century architectural monument, was called unique even by people of that epoch. Built in the place of a post yard that dated the period of Peter I, it has become a harmonious completion of the glamorous Palace embankment of the Neva River.    Catherine II, who planned to offer the Palace to Grigory Orlov, ordered the construction to the Italian master Antonio Rinaldi. The construction that started in 1768 lasted for 17 years. The main material chosen for the Palace's exterior and interior decoration was natural stone - marble and granite of different colors that gave the palace its original appearance performed in classic style as well as its name - the Marble Palace.
