Fence of Summer Garden

The Fence of Summer Garden from the Neva River facade is a real masterpiece known throughout the world for its blend of solidity and lightness, simplicity and elegancy. The fence was designed by the architect Yury Felten, according to the royal decree of Cathenine II. Constructing took 16 years - from 1770 to 1786. The project has been modified for several times. Plinth, columns and vases were cut of "wide stone" - a name which red granite used to be called in the 18th century. Fence sections fixed on 36 columns, and gate were forged in the city of Tula. The total length of the fence is 232 meters.
