Bank Bridge

Russia, St. Petersburg

This footbridge that is only of 1.85 meters wide, was designed by the engineer V. Tretter in 1825-1826. The griffins that made the bridge one of the most recognizable city landmarks were the work of Pavel Sokolov. Bank Bridge, which combines both a technical innovation and an artistic design, is a perfect example of Saint Petersburg architecture of early 19th century. The bridge takes its name from the building it stands beside - the original State Bank, it houses now the State University of Economics and Finance. The bridge's four famous cast-iron griffins (winged lions) represent mythical creatures reputed as guardians of treasure. Their golden wings are a symbol of Saint Petersburg.
